When allowed to work all the way, a tough water spot that would not rub out will now wipe off in a single swipe to leave crystal clear glass underneath. Because it does not leave a toxic residue once the cleaning is complete, new dirt will not coat your tub or shower as quickly as it used to, and when it does, it will not build up as fast.
Quick daily maintenance is the easiest and most effective way to keep your shower door and every other surface clean, and if done regularly, you will never see thick build up, and you will be able to go long stretches between each cleaning.
To keep a shower door spotless day after day, simply wipe it down after each shower. When no water dries in place, no hard water spots will form. This is by far the most simple way to make sure you never have a hazy door, but it can be tough for some people to commit to.
A shower squeegee will allow you to quickly eliminate moisture in order to leave a dry door, but a high quality microfiber cloth will do the trick as well. As long as you are leaving no moisture on there to form drops, you will not see any scum building over time.
The squeegee has a built in hook so you can hang it over your shower head for convenience, and quickly clear away water before you step out. The flexible blade conforms to the surface and pushes away all residual water to leave glass spot free.
Simply hang back up when finished, and it is good to go again no matter how quickly the next bather needs to wash. A cloth works best for large showers, or ones where there is a rack close by.
You will want it dry when wiping, so it can not just hang out in the shower at all times. To use one, simply wipe in one continuous motion from top to bottom making sure to cover all surfaces.
A good cloth should absorb and eliminate all water spots with a single pass in most cases. Wring out when finished and then hang dry for the next use. It should still work damp for multiple showers, and they dry quickly so it will not stink or grow stuff when left for several days.
Almost like a squeegee and cloth combined, our Super Multi Sponge offers incredible drying power and an advanced surface that will help you remove every spec of grime in a single swipe.
The sponge will absorb and remove more moisture than a cloth, and it will clean and shine the surface better than a squeegee. Simply take a dry sponge and wipe the surface dry after you shower, then set on a ledge to dry for later use.
Use Scum Off to make a daily spray for a slightly easier way to accomplish the same task. Because there is spraying involved it will be easy to get the kids on board, and because it is Scum Off you can be confident that it is totally safe for them to handle.
Simply mix 2Tbs into one quart of water and spray down every surface when you are done with the shower. Instead of drying in place, water will sheet down, and run off to prevent minerals and soap from getting stuck.
For best results use directly after showering while the surfaces are still wet. Scum Off is easily one of the best ways to clean soap scum and hard water from your glass shower door, and it will make all other areas of your tub sparkle too.
It is easier to get the results you want, and it will take way less effort on your part. It is also incredibly gentle on your skin and respiratory system, and safe for use around kids.
Despite being so safe, it is also incredibly powerful and effective for this chore. Forget about trying fifty different things you have around you house, and settle on one proven product that is simply good.
Your shower will be spotless and you will be able to move on to the next impossible cleaning chore on your list. Your email address will not be published. Holy clean glass Batman! Thanks for making me look bad.
My shower door is cleaner than ever. Now what the heck am I supposed to complain about? Could I use Scum Off on the outside of my windows? And is it safe to use on the aluminum edges of the window?
It is perfect for outside windows and even has instructions for doing it right on the bottle. Daily maintenance truly does work! I use some cleaners though when cleaning. Every weekends i try to find time to scrub the glass shower door.
Quick, everyday cleaning only sounds like it takes a lot of time. With the right tools, you can keep your shower clean longer without being late for work. A shower squeegee, microfiber cloth, or good quality daily spray can make a difference with only seconds of your time each morning.
More on Daily Shower Maintenance. Hard water spots, soap scums, the ones i hate about glass shower doors and removing them can be a daunting task. The more build of scums and hard water spots, the harder it will be to get rid of them.
I got it at the grocery store, sold with the regular vinegar, in a gallon jug. I sprayed it all over the doors, applied paper towels, and sprayed them again so it would soak for awhile. Scrubbed with a scotch brite type pad and it came off.
Regular vinegar had done nothing, it had been like spraying water. The high-strength vinegar was like a miracle. I could actually see the cloudy mineral deposits coming off as I sprayed.
This was after literally 4 yrs of shower door heck. I was so incredibly happy!! I now pick it up every time I go to that grocery store to keep a gallon of it on reserve at all times.
I saw your post and gave vinegar a try. It came off with such ease I stood in amazement just staring! I am having the same problem in my son's shower. I tried vinegar, plus a few other things today, without success.
I will try soaking the paper towels on the doors for a while to see if it works. To maintain the doors clean, I recommend the Method brand shower spray. I use this in my shower because it's too high for me to reach with a squeegee and it's as clear as the day it was installed.
Once I get my son's door clean I will insist he use it too. I have this theory that many, not all but many, locations in the Southwest US have significant boron in the water. If that is the case I don't think all the vinegar in the world is going to help.
This will remove boron. I would suggest that the marks may not be hard water deposits but etching of the glass, which cannot be removed. I had to replace a whole glass shower surround due to horrible etching. We have a water softener in our house Same thing happened in the shower.
The glass company suggested we switch from bar soap to body wash which I don't like. But, I did switch from Tone soap to Dove and squeegee the glass religiously. So far, no further etching.
I suspect that the folks not having luck with vinegar may actually have etched glass. I started washing mine the same way and it works. Just posted an answer to a similar thread on this forum: Works great, no chemicals.
I even have been known to scrub the shower stall a bit while showering myself. My doors aren't etched, I can remove the deposits with my fingernail. Can I safely use a Scotch Brite type pad on glass?
I talked to the water bureau and they supplemented our high mountain lake water with groundwater in February and it had a high mineral content. They didn't know what minerals or how to remove. Said I was the only caller. We have soft water here and I haven't had hard water deposits on anything since I lived in Arizona.
My doors are less than six months old. Previous doors were used for sixteen years with none of this mineral deposits. Lemi shine worked in the dishwasher and cleaned up all my cobalt blue ceramic dishes which had deposits on them and it worked on my tub spout but not the doors.
It's one part hot vinegar not boiling, just hot and one part original Dawn in a spray bottle. You can spray this on and leave it overnight if necessary. After I spray, I work it in circles with a scrubby sponge so I make sure all the surfaces have some solution on them.
I also used one of those white erase sponges mr Clean etc. It seems to be working. I have a horizontal etched stripe design on my shower doors and unfortunately, I had put them on backwards with the texture to the inside, so you can imagine what the calcium etc did.
This is taking more than one pass, but they look really good. As soon as I'm satisfied with the results I will turn the doors around so I don't have to go through this again. Try Fantastic and let it set for 5 minutes.
That product has never failed me. Be careful of vinegar, it will bleach your pretty towels. I spotted mine when I stupidly used the vinegar and soda to keep my drains clean.
I found out later from a scientists it was a waste of time. Part of the problem is the reverse door situation. When I get the doors totally cleaned up and turned to the right side, I think they will be much easier to keep clean.
Some people use RainX which is used for auto windows but I've heard some people haven't had good luck with it. Last winter I spent some time removing all the hard water spots from my ceramic tile and glass in the shower and then treated them with a copolymer that helps to repel water.
But, with the coating on them, it's much easier to clean the light limescale build up off without having to scrub and scrub. Then I used the Gel Gloss that someone else mentioned.
My shower door and surround look terrific and stay that way for a long time. BTW, I'm doing the same thing on the headlights of my car. They are discolored from road grime. I use a Sonic Scrubber on them the non abrasive pads - little by little they are getting clearer and the Gel Gloss helps keep them clearer.
I can finally add to this post! My shower doors were beyond repair We checked into the price of new doors and yikes! Thought we better look harder for an answer. I ordered it and it worked a miracle!!! My doors and dark green tile look like new!
It can't be too wet. But after a try or two, I did my whole shower enclosure and still have half the bottle left. Not to mention the shower seems so much bigger now that the doors are crystal clear! Here is a link that might be useful: Along the same lines, has anyone tried Amaze?
Its a paste already has water mixed it ; I think they have several versions of it. I want to thank those above who suggested Rain-X. I am a bit of a clean freak and scrub my shower x's a week. The glass doors are a struggle, but spraying with a daily shower spray after each shower does seem to help.
I am going out and buying Rain-x today: It is a chemical free sponge that only requires water to clean. Hard water stains wipe right off glass shower doors. It is safe to use on just about anything.
I even use it to clean my granite. Works toilet bowl cleaner will take off just about anything. It was the only thing that we found that removed iron stains with minimal scrubbing.
It is caustic though and the fumes could knock you out so make sure you have good ventilation. White vinegar and water solution, paste of baking soda and lemon juice or baking soda and white vinegar mixture are the good solutions to remove hard water stains from pipes and sinks.
But you have to use it once in two days to keep it in a clean way. Mostly I consider a maid service from Handi maids in Orangeville http: So I doesn't need to worry about the cleaning task, mostly the furniture, kitchen and bathrooms.
Peggy N CleaningSvcs you are a genius! I can't believe I never thought of that. Toilet Bowl Cleaner is the answer. I needed to remove hard water stains from my solar light globes and I didn't even need to scrub at all It just wiped off!!
Seriously I just want to kiss you lol! This would definitely work on shower doors. I use citric acid to clean off hard water and limescale from shower doors and in my toilet.
Any of the cleaners that break down hard water mineral deposits, is acidic in nature. I just make a paste of the citric acid on the back of a scrubby sponge and scrub for a minute to make sure everything is coated with this mixture.
I have done this where there was quite a bit of build up. It just comes off and no noxious fumes. You can purchase citric acid in the canning dept of any big box store or any beer making store where it is cheaper and sold by the pound.
Another way to even purchase it cheaper is too look up soapmaking suppliers online as they sell it super cheap for people to make bath fizzies, etc. I keep a bucket around for canning tomatoes and for cleaning anything that needs a low PH to come clean.
Vinegar is acidic but not as concentrated as citric acid paste. And, the nice thing about using citric acid is there is no fumes or fragrance lingering after it's use. It is all natural and comes from citrus fruits.
It's like I never touched it.. Should I try mixing it with some baking soda to make a paste then using it to coat the glass to let it sit for an hour or so? Pumice works on toilets, but I know I can't use it on glass Is there anything that actually works on glass?
Mine were really bad I tried most of the above with plenty of elbow grease But tonight after reading through some of this I went and scraped all the calcium off with a razor blade, manually knocking down all the calcium deposits.
Then I applied the Zep calcium, lime, and rust remover with a magic eraser. Came back 20 mins later, and applied more Zep with the magic eraser and elbow grease, scrubbing in small circles. My shower door looks almost new Going to go pickup some RainX tomorrow and start squeegeeing every day.
You can find the Zep at Home Depot. Just got done cleaning my shower doors!! Tried all of the above ALL Failed!! All hard water streaks are now gone by using a headlight restore kit from Turtle wax.. Basic car rubbing compound and wet dry sand paper.
Started with the 2 side of the sanding disk very lightly and make sure the doors are wet with water and rubbing compound to prevent scratching.. No razor blade, or chisel!
Took me 10 minuets start to finish You may not be able to clean off the hard water stains, but you can make them less noticeable. Get some baby oil gel and apply it with a magic eraser.
When I first tried this, I used just the baby iol. This is a soft, non-abrasive cleaner that is suitable for metal, vinyl, and glass. You can use this without fear of scratching the glass or removing the finish from the metal.
Comet Bathroom Cleaner comes in a spray that you apply to the entire door. The key for it working is to leave it on the glass for fifteen to thirty minutes. This will give it plenty of time to really work its magic.
After the product has had time to set in then scrub the glass door with a non-abrasive cloth or sponge. It should be mentioned that soap scum comes from the talc in bar soap.
If you switch to a liquid soap, then you can minimize the amount of scum build up. There are some other types of bathroom shower door cleaners you can use but all of them work to some degree or another.
Like Comet, you have to let them set on the glass for several minutes to give them enough time to clean. If your door has mold and mildew or lime deposits you will have to get separate cleaners for that. Be careful of lime cleaners because some of them are more abrasive than others and can take off the finish from the metal on the door.
Check out the labels and see which ones are suitable for metal. Once the glass shower door is clean, you need to use the shower to thoroughly rinse off all of the cleaning solutions.
Next, take some Windex or other appropriate glass cleaner and spray and wipe down the shower doors.

Homemade shower cleaners are a great way to replace pricey and chemical filled shower cleaners from the store. Try the best 2 ingredient homemade shower cleaner on tough soap scum or for daily shower cleaning.
Homemade cleaners are my favorite! With just two ingredients this shower cleaner will have your tub and walls sparkling again! This shower cleaner has been called several things on Pinterest, but no matter what, it is tried and true!
I often buy the ingredients in bulk which makes this homemade shower cleaner a breeze to make for just a few cents. If you have young children in the house, keeping chemicals away from them is important.
But, tub and shower maintenance is important too! Other than having a sparkly clean shower, I love the smell it leaves. Using vinegar is an old fashioned and well-known trick to DIY cleaning.
Use this to wipe down your shower or tub when you are done and your shower will always be clean! Vinegar will help melt soap scum and tub and shower buildup, clean sinks, appliances and just about anything. When combined with an equal part of vinegar, this is a solution that many people have been using for years to remove soap scum without scrubbing.
Using this shower cleaner, the vinegar will penetrate the buildup and the dish soap will cut through the pesky soap residue. Use this solution daily as a maintenance cleaner or about once a week for deeper cleanings.
But, you can really save this cleaning solution in any container that works for you. The wand is super convenient and it can hang in the shower. We have exceptionally hard water on our acreage, very high mineral content that would leave deep red rusty stains.
We installed reverse osmosis water softner which help immensely. Second step is to stay ahead of the cleaning so the water residue is never there long enough to create staining.
I plan to try this chemical free cleaner to see how it works with that in mind. No bleach for me.. I used to be a bleacj queen. I kept getting sinus infections. I now use Odo Ban.
Bar keepers friend u can get it at family doller dollar general and maybe other places my mom has country water and it does wonders. Yes, you should rinse it off: You can let it soak for even better results before rinsing it too!
I have extremely hard water and have clear glass shower doors in my master bath. I can't get the hard water stains off to keep it clean. I have tried everything it seems They look soooo horrid and I am so embarassed.
Any suggestions would be great! Welcome to GardenWeb, kristinamaria. Yes, vinegar should do it. Pour it in a spray bottle and spray on the glass, let it work on the calcium build-up for a couple minutes and then wipe off.
Long term, you should look at getting some type of water softener, and you should squeegee the glass after every shower to keep the calcium from building up. If the vinegar doesn't do the job, you can move to something like Lime-Away or CLR, but try the vinegar first - it's cheaper and less corrosive to the metal parts in the shower.
Wipe residue off with a damp cloth, then squeegy. I tried Rain-X once. Almost passed out from the fumes. Can't be good for you and must be applied from inside the shower with the doors closed.
Have noticed it is often recommended though If you are able to get it off, mine was so bad from renter not cleaning properly, you are lucky. Mine was so bad that nothing would get it all off. We tried razor blades to scrape it off.
If you are able to get it clean there is a spray that home improvement sells. It is in a pink can and is something like Gel Gloss? It seals the glass from water stains. You reapply every few months and it works great. My pool cleaner sprays my french doors and I plan to use it on the new doors.
The old ones were ruined by my not tackling this early on. I used it on my shower and it keeps it really nice. After getting it really clean, use squeegy, stay on it.
Do not let it get that bad again. It will become one of your most important and rewarding chores. I tried to repair the goo stuff and finally gave up. I unscrewed the shower door frame, removed it, cleaned up the plastic shower edges, and began to use a shower curtain.
The curtain rod squeezes in the top of the shower edges and I have a pretty plastic curtain that has gentle flower designs on it. The curtain background is an opaque white with kinda white splotches. There is no "liner" since the pretty curtain is plastic itself.
Water stains are not an issue because of the white splotches in the design - you can't tell if there is a water stain or not. No mildew probs now since the whole thing airs out better with the doors gone. Just normal cleaning the shower, no more gross stuff.
Light goes through the curtain but you cannot see the person in shower. What you will have to do is use a heavy duty cleaner like Lime-Away or CLR and use several applications.
Use the cleaner with a scrubbing pad. It may be too far gone to look like new. After you have done the heavy duty cleaning, then keep up with the regular cleaning after each showering. Keep a squeegee in the shower.
Keep a spray bottle of vinegar and water next to the shower. Spray the shower down after each use, then squeegee it off. If you do not have a sqeegee or spray bottle, just take your towel and wipe down the shower.
If someone has one of those closed-in showers, always leave the door open for a while. Allow the shower to dry. People close those doors; leaving a hot, moist shower to get mold and mildew.
I had the same issue. We live in a very hard water area lime is our big culprit. CLR, an auto glass cleaner I had to special order, vinegar, dryer sheets, steam, blah blah blah.
They all did next to nothing. Finally discovered something that works: I got it at the grocery store, sold with the regular vinegar, in a gallon jug.

The gel works better because it sticks to the doors and you will have to do it less often. You just squirting the gel on the eraser and scrub the door until you can no longer see the water msrks, even if they are etched into the glass.
I used wet sanding with a fine grit sandpaper grit. Wetting with water seemed to work as well as wetting with vinegar. Elbow grease works well with any cleaning agent.
I've tried vinegar alone, vinegar with baking soda, Lima Away, CLR and others and none of them did a good enough job. I just discovered Bar Keepers Friend - the cook-top version and it is wonderful!
My shower looks beautiful and not much elbow grease was needed and I had a lot of build up. Give it a shot! I have tried all of the above suggestions. My shower doors were gross. Not dirty, just hard water scale.
Found a product at the Ace Hardware store call EdFred shower stall and tile cleaner.
