Did you happen to run the registry cleaner? I don't know if that's the problem, but it should not be because it removes things that are safe to remove from your system.
I can only think of two solutions. One is get a copy of Linux with a Live CD capability I know Ubuntu has it, have the disc in when you boot up your computer so you can run Linux off of the disc. Use a partitioner Ubuntu does have a partitioner when using the Live CD, I know because this is how I put it on my desktop to try it out to make a new, decent partition on your hard drive.
Then install Windows to that new partition check to make sure you'll have enough room. Now your computer should boot from the new partition and give you access to everything on the original partition. This is probably the best option as it would possibily cost nothing, though I'm not sure how you're going to get a copy of Linux, as you need a computer to download and burn it to a disc.
Maybe a local library can help. Here's the second idea. If you can't get it to much I suggest you get a cheap new hard drive to add to your computer or a replacement for your laptop's hard drive and a drive enclosure make sure it can interface with the drive.
What you can do for a desktop, where two hard drives are attached, is install Windows on the new hard drive, allowing you to boot your computer. You will have to make the old hard drive a slave in that case, I think but I'm not sure, and I unfortunately don't know how to do that.
It shouldn't be hard to find out. For a laptop you will probably need to put in the new hard drive, which may be best done by a computer store, as that may keep from voiding the warranty contact wherever you got it from to find out about that, and then install Windows on the new drive.
Hook the old drive up to the drive enclosure, which will make it into an external hard drive. What this does for you is gives you back your computers without losing any data, though programs will have to be reinstalled on the new drives.
By having the old drives hooked up you can copy all of your files to the new ones. In any case, good luck, and hopefully there is something less drastic than what I've suggested that will work.

Over the past couple months we have started to see weird things happen like desktop icons being removed, files on the desktop being deleted, etc. This past issue has been almost cleared by running a system restore point, but the overall question is why..
Presently we are using ver 2. I'm open for thoughts on this as I would like to continue to use CCleaner but unless I can find good evidence, I can't put our company at risk.
Most of what CCleaner does can be seen from the ini files. Some if it is internally programmed and cant be viewed, but that stuff is mostly to do with browser cleaning. Its far too easy for modern society to blame someone else than to take responsibility for themselves, or indeed to study the problem in proper depth.
What CCleaner does can be studied in some detail. A default CCleaner install has no possibility of doing anything remotely close to turfing a system in cleaning mode.
Ok, not much info is given on whether people are running reg cleaning functions or just CCleaner itself. Startup items cannot cause a computer to fail to boot, although it may cause you to lose, say, access to a printer, scanner, whatever.
But a computer can boot with 0 startup items. Running CCleaner's registry tool. That is probably the most unsafe part of CCleaner, although usually if you untick the top 2 entries before running it, you have no probs.

If you have auto updates on, it may have downloaded and applied it before you rebooted, so you saw the problem AFTER booting up. Depending on specifics, failed startup items can crash the kernel with user mode driver framework type apps.
Same here, the CCleaner registry cleaner doesn't go deep, just gets obvious, noncritical, entries. Primarily I get installer references and extensions popping up in the list. The references are if I had an exe somewhere, ran it, then moved it and the extensions will be replaced if I do anything with that file type again.
But then, that's me, may not be the same for everyone. There hasn't been an update to CCleaner in a few weeks. I have to side with Caldor on this, because CCleaner cannot take out anything serious unless changes have been made so that CCleaner cleans more than advised.
And, important windows files in windows are protected by the operating system anyway. This is why virus' died out and the new wave started of worms and botnets - because protected systems files prevented virus' taking them over and fiddling with them.

Already have an account? Posted December 18, Hi, I downloaded and ran CCleaner yesterday on my laptop. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites. The new fan from eBay was one solid piece, it did not move, which further cemented my thought that the original fan was broken.
I removed the fan and cooler by removing the three screws from the fan assembly and the four screws for the heat sink over the CPU. I tried removing as much thermal paste as I could from the CPU.
I reapplied thermal past to the CPU - I've never had to do this for a laptop so I have no idea if I used enough or too much. I then reseated the cooler and placed all 8 screws back. TL;DR - To my disappointment the fan still showed no signs of life when attempting to turn the computer on again.
At this point I believe either the fan header or something with the motherboard itself is at fault. I am not skilled enough with a soldering iron to replace the fan header, assuming I could find a replacement header online.
I do not believe it was a HDD problem or a memory problem. The HDD did give me errors when running a health check but even replacing it with a new HDD gave me the same dead results. At this point I am scraping this laptop as there is little more that I can do with it; I don't think I'll be able to repair it.
In short, if you are experiencing issues like mine it may be worth it to check to see if the CPU fan cooler is working on your laptop. If not, replacing the fan is not difficult to do and the part is cheap. It could work for you if the fan itself is at fault.

It will start some kind of recover proceedure it will take some time you need to be patient look for led indicators. Flashing bios with recovery proceedure can take from 15 to 60 minutes. Bios file must be on first partition and corresponds to model of notebook.

This behaviour is erratic, and happens during use too. I had to pull the hard drive, plug in my bootable USB otherwise it won't show in the boot list, then turn it on. I hoped the screen problem was some kinda Windows driver issue, but I now have the same problem with Linux.
Strangely, the HDMI output works perfectly. Also, changing the resolution in Linux gets the laptop screen going again for a short time. I had an Asus sca with this exact problem. It was a bad BIOS flash.
Probably two bad BIOS flashes actually. I updated the BIOS from to and then my laptop would shut down every 30 minutes. I think that BIOS flash didn't work completely because the shut down issue seems to be a 'feature' when the CPU clock doesn't match the motherboard.

It is not a registry cleaner, it has one but it is not the main core of the product, it is an automatic cleaner of temp and cache files. Using it as a registry cleaner is something people used to do years ago and is rarely the main reason the product is used now.
Because registry cleaner at best do nothing good, and at worst it damages Windows. It's known for a load of other major things. When I say "it's known" it's a case of "New install of Windows.
I run CCleaner, shit breaks. People run it every week as some form of essential maintenance. If you have an old computer, then yeh, by all means use it. Just don't run it every 2 minutes to the extent that Windows can't keep up with repairing itself, and then shit on Windows.
Everybody else likely is just going to be speculating. Blaming the OS for someone using a registry cleaner is like blaming the car for breaking after putting water in the gad tank. It defaults to "clean" read: Not just the registry which doesn't need cleaning every nanosecond, if at all nowadays.
If you run it as standard, RIP search indexing. So in effect, by taking the time to go over the list of applications to clean and unchecking "MS Search" you'd be fine? Those are just the obvious things that break.
There are more subtle problems that may crop up think: Windows update fails to install months later because of other things. The registry is just a database, and touching it is opening up a can of worms.
XP was considerably more liberal with what it did to the registry, and as a result you ended up with a bunch of crap in there that did affect system performance. Vista and newer does not suffer from the same problem.
XP was a child who threw their toys around and never cleaned them up. Vista onwards had grown up and knew to put their toys backed where they belonged. Apparently, CCleaner is the weird step-sibling that pulls the head off of figures and sets fire to things that look like they'll burn.

UX being the second most. The registry is the engine, the wheels and everything in between, the bits that actually make the car do things once you've used the wheel and pedals. It's many other things as well.
Indexing is just one example. The BSOD is just running it, or in some cases having it installed because of run on startup. If you disable everything bar registry cleaning to make buggering up Windows less likely, you're just limiting yourself to something that is unneeded in modern Windows.
It's not needed for you maybe, but what about my shitty hp stream with its 32gb SDD? Only 9gb for me to use, and windows update basically killed the rest. You don't need HP restore partition on 10 device.
Just reset your Windows installation look in Settings app with option to fully remove everything on the drive slow mode. Apparently that partition is not deletable. The laptop came with 8. And it seems like it's undeletable according to this discussion.
If you do full reset, the utility will remove that partition. I've done it to multiple 8. Just make sure you select slow option. Actually, Windows 10 also j has all drivers so you don't need a single thing from OEM.
Lol, apparently you can never delete it. It's on a protected partition and I can't even touch it with diskconfig. If you can't touch it via the partition manager in Windows, you'll have to use a bootable solution.
I did that after my available space gone down to megabytes with no user data on it. Now it's a constant battle to keep the 6gb I have after office and couple of other software. I will never buy a 32gb windows laptop again.
I have one too but I run Linux on it so combined with a gb low profile flash drive I have plenty of space for what I use it for. The point of my post was to get some more factual answers than that.
How would you back that up? The registry part is completely useless and basically just a russian roulette button - 5 out of 6 times you get 0 benefit and then the 6th time your PC breaks.
CCleaner has 0 benefits, but introduces the risk of breaking your PC. So why ever install it? Because it has zero positive benifit. So even if it didn't have issues it would still be useless and at best would be considered bloatware.
Please don't think I'm just arguing for the sake of it but - have you contacted Piriform about this? Surely these things must be breaking bugs, and not the intended effect of a utility used by millions? They will know of the bsod issues and the search and Cortana issues.
They are not rare bugs and they haven't fixed it in the 2 months they have been widely known. Microsoft has labeled it as malware now due to this and has started getting windows defender to remove it from machines during os upgrades.
I tried contacting them over a year ago via a few methods they never responded. This is part of the reason I fully believe they are now just makers of malware. Even if they originally intended to make a good product. Any source for the statement that Defender labels it as malware?
The thread on piriform is an upgrade-based thread. I believe Forman's comment there is unrelated. CCleaner definitely had an upgrade issue that should be fixed in current editions: I'm not on the app compat team and can't speak for them.
If you want details, contacting CCleaner would be a smart idea. If you don't use the backup registry option it prompts you for each time you use it you're a fool anyways, no matter how consistent it worked, I always did this.

Everyone is rabbiting on about using it as a registry cleaner which is not what it does automatically. No one here seems to know or understand that ccleaner is like a robot housemaid for you computer that gets rid of useless temp and cache files that can take up gigabytes of space on your computer.
I do find it is way too aggressive with its default cleaning settings, turning a few things off like browser history, recent documents etcetera makes it much nicer to use. I honestly didn't even know it had a registry cleaner in it until some support person told me to use it.

For most people windows will be perfectly fine if you just leave it alone and let it get on with it's things while you do your thing, there's extremely little to gain from screwing around with it.

It's obvious since the program was so successful that they would continue developing it, so likening it to some kind of nagware is just as ignorant as those using it inappropriately. After 30 years Microsoft's reputation has led people to believe that CCleaner is necessary, because if you've ever worked on computers for a living you'd know it had its place.
Microsoft literally endorsed registry cleaning not too long ago, only to remove it because the new OS's are now stable enough to not need it. Further instability of using registry cleaners is obviously expected when I can irrecoverably damage my OS by updating my Surface Pro 3 without even using CCleaner.
CCleaner is still a great utility for file management if you're a power user, but most people have been ingrained with the idea that Windows is sloppy and will junk itself up if one isn't careful. I have never used a "registry cleaner".

But it only removed references to nonexistent files. I wasn't sure it was a good idea then, but I still did it, and I don't think any better of it now.
Both terms have been irrelevant since, probably, Windows 7. CCleaner is only being roasted now because it's causing a lot of issues where it was innocuous before. It's beneficial for getting rid of orphaned entries that aren't related to any software that's currently installed.

For example, an update that comes down three months later that fails to install. I'm sick of people blaming 10 for all of their problems. They do, but if you don't update to that version Windows will automatically uninstall CC when it does its own update.
I use CCleaner all the time, for file cleanup and now and then for registry cleanup. Never had a problem, never had Defender flag it. I don't use Cortana, but my search works just fine.
Just wanted to add a comment in favor. Cortana has been disabled since day 1. Never once had an issue with ccleaner. But then again, i reimage my computer evey few months as well. I've been using the cleaner bit on w10 ever since I installed it.
Not a single problem to date and Cortana works just fine. Just don't let it muck with MS search. I used it for years without a single issue to clean out the trash everyone and their grandma dumps into the registry, first time i used it in windows 10 it broke every single built in app and had to roll back to get them working again.
Regular crap cleaning still works fine for me though, only the registry filters are really bad in windows 10 so can't clean out the crap in there. If only program devs would stop being lazy and get their shit together and make their programs clean up after themselves when uninstalled instead of leaving all their crap behind.
The major downfall to that is the store has some pretty hefty limitations on what apps can and cannot do. Why do you think there are so few meaningful apps on there and the ones that are are a shell of what their regular desktop version is.
I blame this on the OS. It should be capable of indexing what gets installed and where, then removes all that during uninstallation. Steam does this with games. Basically Windows needs a package management system.
I guess the App Store is the future for this. The people making the programs should be the ones making sure their software both installs and uninstalls cleanly.

I can't count the number of times i encounter random empty folders laying around months after removing the program they were created by because the devs of said programs are too lazy to make a proper uninstaller. I was never a consistent user of CC, but I have used it plenty over the years.
Not because of problems, I probably just forgot to install it when I bought this computer. However, I did install it a few months ago, and only ran it twice, I think. I can't isolate the time frames, but I sure have had a bunch of stupid, annoying issues with Windows 10 lately.
One of the most annoying things is explorer. Regardless, I think I will uninstall CC. I've had CCleaner cause more ham in a corporate environment than any other single program. It loves to hose plc programing software and doesn't play nice with many erp systems.

Neither of these are good alternatives and the best is not to have 3rd party software screw with your system in bad ways. They have no way of knowing if they are however. So I'm guessing they just remove all values not on a whitelist. I feel that CCleaner does things that one can do themselves, while having the potential to harm your system.
Too many people don't understand that the registry should be left alone, unless they really know what they're doing but still check the clean registry option. It is not storage and don't end up like a friend, with 12GB in the trash.
This gets rid of all temporary files, that Windows and other programs do not need anymore. Now, go into your downloads folder and delete the downloads that you no longer need.
Why keep executables that you already used and don't need any more? Do the same with your Documents folder; delete things that you know you won't need. You can now delete your browsing history and clear cookies, if you want.
This won't give a whole lot of space and is entirely up to you. It may speed up the browser somewhat. Just be aware that you'll have to re-enter passwords. All of this can be done in 5 minutes time, if that.
You've pretty much done what CCleaner does, without having to have a program for it. I, personally would rather do those things myself. I'm not too trusting of these utilities. Plus, Windows already has a tool that does what CCleaner does: I'll trust the Windows tool over any third party application any day.
Problems are from people just checking everything off then cleaning, And running the registry part without a backup. If you use it it's best to do it in small sections.
If there is a bug report it to piriform. Or using the default settings. Which is known to kill Cortana, permanently kill search, and even bsod on some machines. It may not happen to your pc configuration, but at this point it is basically malware.
The only default setting is MS Search. That doesn't permanently kill search or cortana. Windows just has to re-index search. Agree with no point in registry section for Novices, It does serve a small purpose with advanced users not basic users.
Was just responding to OP's why? People tend to ignore the backup before it run it. You can run ccleaner without ever going anyplace near the registry cleaner part of it.
If people frequented the forms they'd know there was just a major effort to remove entries that removed backups. No on some machines windows needs to be reinstalled to get search working again, it isn't a super rare issue.
There are more issues than just the registry cleaner, it also causes bluescreens on some machines even when not using the reg cleaner. In the xp era it was a decent program, but it's not anymore. Not trying to argue about.
I just haven't seen any of the critical bug posts on their forum not that they don't exist.. It's shifting away from the "speed up and save space" era to more of a privacy tool. It goes back to. Making a reddit thread about it is nice and all to raise awareness but how are devs supposed to know when no one reports anything.
I have used ccleaner on hundreds of machines through the years. Probably close to 50 Win10 machines now. I have never had an issue. Possibly because i don't use the registry cleaner pointless and I don't use the default clean settings.
Not understanding the settings and the effects they have is on the user, not the software. If the default settings behave like malware it is not silly to call it malware. The majority of the people that will use it will not change the settings.
Out of curiosity what do you use it for? On these 's of machines, I would love to know some real use cases. What field are you in? Is there a different type of program I could use to repair the boot partition table?
Does anyone have any insight into this at all? Yeah, I wouldn't really have had much faith in that even if I wasn't in the situation I'm currently in. Because it would seem that if Disk Utility can tell there's an issue, why wouldn't the computer the HDD originally came from be able to tell there's a boot issue, and boot me into the bios or some other method so that I can repair my partition table?
I'm just really hoping there isn't an issue with the graphics, because that's the only other thing I can think of. In years past I was given an HP laptop that no one wanted because it "didn't work". The beep "code" told you what was wrong.

If anyone could give me any insight at all, or even just a thought as to something that maybe could possibly help I would be forever in debt to you no joke, this laptop really has me at a loss.
So I've tried pretty much everything to no avail. I'm still searching online for possible solutions to this day, but I haven't found anything that will work. ASUS was unforuttnely incredibly unhelpful when I talked to them on the phone.
It was basically "send it to us and let us charge you" or look for a new computer. I appreciate everyone's suggestions; unfortunately no button combination or method of removing the battery has done a thing for me so far.
I might try to see if there's something wrong with the on board graphics, perhaps even the CPU, but I'm not sure what all I'd be able to do if I found out one of those components is the problem. I will continue to look for a solution to this though, unless of course I find a decent deal on a sub 15" laptop with a Core i5, at which point in time I'll probably give up on this ASUS.

After some more investigating and opening up the bottom case, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that my motherboard is either fried, has shorted, or one of the connections from the board to the CPU fan has faulted.
After opening it and attempting to turn it on I noticed the CPU cooler fan was not spinning. My thought was the fan was dead, as the fan and cooler assembly seemed to move like it was broken in some way. The new fan from eBay was one solid piece, it did not move, which further cemented my thought that the original fan was broken.
I removed the fan and cooler by removing the three screws from the fan assembly and the four screws for the heat sink over the CPU. I tried removing as much thermal paste as I could from the CPU.
I reapplied thermal past to the CPU - I've never had to do this for a laptop so I have no idea if I used enough or too much. I then reseated the cooler and placed all 8 screws back. TL;DR - To my disappointment the fan still showed no signs of life when attempting to turn the computer on again.
At this point I believe either the fan header or something with the motherboard itself is at fault. I am not skilled enough with a soldering iron to replace the fan header, assuming I could find a replacement header online.
I do not believe it was a HDD problem or a memory problem. The HDD did give me errors when running a health check but even replacing it with a new HDD gave me the same dead results. At this point I am scraping this laptop as there is little more that I can do with it; I don't think I'll be able to repair it.
In short, if you are experiencing issues like mine it may be worth it to check to see if the CPU fan cooler is working on your laptop. If not, replacing the fan is not difficult to do and the part is cheap.

It seems always when an update goes in over night and must shut itself down during updates. So I just told the netbook to stay awake to see if this fixes the issue. It will start some kind of recover proceedure it will take some time you need to be patient look for led indicators. Flashing bios with recovery proceedure can take from 15 to 60 minutes. Bios file must be on first partition and corresponds to model of notebook.
In my case it was xep. In my case I have read bios from motherboard with programmator I had corrupt bios. After flash with programmator all start OK. I have an asus vivobook eha laptop, I went to do a reset and it turned off on me.
