I always keep an eye on background tasks piling up with new software installs and stay on top of that, but overall Windows 7 did a good job with that. I've only been using Windows 8 for a couple weeks; hopefully it's just as good.
Modern PC hardware helps too, I'm sure. It seems like a 2-year old PC is still able to keep up pretty well; whereas if you had a 2-year old PC 5 years ago, it would be considered an antiquated piece of garbage.
