I used to set it run at the startup or when I feel that the computer needs cleaning or after removing a virus or whenever I want without any problem.
System One OS Windows 8. Use CCleaner everyday, cleans all the rubbish out and its very stable. I'll take the contrary position and say you've never needed to run CCleaner at all.
While I won't say it's completely without value, you should only be running it on an as-needed basis at most. Once upon a time CCleaner was a nice little program targeted at people who would understand the various risks and benefits to each option. Then it was "discovered" by people who think they know more about troubleshooting computers than they actually do and used as a means of proving their knowledge to those who knew even less.
The CCleaner developers responded by dumbing down the program considerably and adding a bunch of dubious features. On the one hand, it's hard to fault them for giving customers what they want, but on the other hand it's always sad to see a once good program go down the path of scope creep.
System One OS 8. Helmut New Member Power User. It's largely just trivial stuff that makes no difference, some things it does, or rather let it do, actually slows up your use of Applications.
Antilope New Member Member. Sacramento, California Posts I use CCleaner on a regular basis on my Windows 8. If these files are in place when Windows Defender or Malwarebytes runs, it has to sort through all of those temporary files looking for virus signatures.
It's better to be rid of them. My sister has Windows 7 on her Dell 17r laptop. I used CCleaner on it and removed 2gb of temporary files. Southern California Posts I too think Ccleaner is a targeting program, meaning if you are having difficulty removing a program, then it is good to run.
I used it to remove excess java files from an earlier install. I used it to free up space on a small HDD that needed it. If your computer is slow, try this on for size: Most people have plenty of space.
Ccleaner can potentially slow down your computer if you aren't careful. Remove certain excess files, and your computer may have to re-create them. Also, if it is set to startup with the computer, it can take a tinsy bit more time to boot longer with slower computers, negligible with faster ones.
Space coast of Florida Posts 2, Yes, there are other ways to accomplish this but why bother when CCleaner does such a good job of it? It can also delete cookies, browsing history, etc.
It's just a nice program that keeps accumulated junk off my hard drive. Every so often a computer just needs a good cleaning. Why not use Ccleaner? Belgrade, Serbia Posts 4, There are better things to do instead of trusting some program to do it for you, don't let it get dirty in first place.
At the time, Microsoft was quietly devising a more agile release scenario for Windows in which it would dispense with its traditional "service pack" releases. Service packs were bundles of software fixes. Organizations had 24 months to move to a service pack and still have supported software, which allowed them to continue to receive security updates.
It described Windows 8. As noted above, though, this extended support end date for Windows 8 didn't exactly track. It should have been Nov. Did Microsoft arbitrarily extend the date?
In response to queries, no answers from Microsoft have arrived. To add to the confusion, Microsoft issued Windows 8. Did that release constitute a new service pack that might reset Windows 8's end-of-life date? Apparently not, based on Windows 8's end of extended support date, although a Forbes article seemed to suggest that was a possibility.
Moreover, Microsoft's lifecycle support page describes Windows 8. Confusingly, service packs also are known as cumulative updates. Back then, Microsoft was in the process of abandoning the meaning of its software update terminology even as it continued to use it.
After the release of Windows 8. It's unclear if Update 2 ever did arrive or even if it existed at all. If it did arrive, it's not described in Microsoft's product lifecycle support pages.
Today, Microsoft updates Windows 10 at least monthly, every four months and every eight months. It claims to issue no more service packs for its Windows 10 OS, and all Windows 10 updates are now considered to be cumulative updates.
They are big 3GB update deliveries. Windows 10 was released in July and it has a mainstream support end date of Oct. For now, organizations can bank on that support timeframe.

Windows 8 passed Microsoft's "extended support" milestone yesterday, which marks its continued use as a potential security hazard. Per its policy, Microsoft no longer issues hotfixes or security updates for Windows 8 after the Jan.
The software is considered to be "unsupported" by Microsoft. Exceptions to this policy might be organizations that have purchased Microsoft's "custom support," but that option is thought to be an expensive one, with contracts lasting just a year.
Most organizations likely moved off Windows 8 some time ago, if they ever stopped using Windows 7. Windows 8's release on Oct. Today, Windows 8 has just a 2.
Windows 8's Early Death Microsoft typically provides a total of 10 years support for its Windows releases, which is divided into a five-year "mainstream support" phase and a five-year "extended support" phase.
Consequently, it might be casually thought that Windows 8 had a lot more life to it, and that it hadn't even completed its first mainstream support phase. But Microsoft changed its terms, leading to an early Windows 8 death.
Microsoft's lifecycle support page provides an explanation, but most people likely would be confused by it. Visitors to the lifecycle support page for Windows 8 will see the following table, which shows extended support end date of Jan.
On the face of it, the policy seems to be suggesting that Windows 8 users don't have to move for a long time. However, they have to read the note on the right where Microsoft explains that Windows 8 users have to move to Windows 8.
You can clean up a lot of unnecessary files without downloading another app, but it's handy to have those cleanup tools a mouse click away. With CCleaner, you just hit the Analyze button and the app will inspect and tidy up storage space hogs, like Web browser caches, temporary files, and Windows log files.
Lots of optional settings to customize behavior: By default, CCleaner deletes files but doesn't fully erase them. The difference is that a deleted file doesn't immediately disappear; it just becomes a section of your storage device that Windows can put other files on.
If you're more security minded and want to fully erase unwanted files, CCleaner's Analyze writes over them with random ones and zeroes, up to 35 times. Other settings let you specify browser cookies that you always want to keep, add custom folders for CCleaner to analyze, or exclude other folders.
The free version of CCleaner doesn't bug you about paying for the premium version, nor does its interface try to trick you into looking at a sales pitch. Some storage savings is temporary: This is not a flaw in CCleaner, just a fact of Web browsing: Deleting your browser cache can get rid of gigabytes of files, but your cache will fill up again over time, so that recovered storage space isn't permanent.
Also, your previously visited pages will take longer to reload if you delete all the files in the browser cache. Cache deletion may be a good practice for privacy-oriented users, or for people transitioning to a different browser, but we would not wipe the cache by default.
In our tests, CCleaner detected a whopping 7GB of log files created by Windows, which it automatically flagged for deletion. Many of these were hundreds of megabytes in size.
However, log files can be useful if your computer is misbehaving, as they contain error messages to assist you or a technician. They're not supposed to get anywhere near this large, and old logs just tend to sit unused and take up space, but we'd prefer to keep at least the most recent one by default, in case something goes haywire later.
These were previously installed Windows Update patches. If Windows says that they're OK to delete, it's a mystery why CCleaner -- which ordinarily takes a more aggressive approach -- did not flag them.
While MB isn't a huge amount of space, the Disk Cleanup report made us wonder what else CCleaner might be overlooking or not prioritizing. It's not clear what would happen to CCleaner if we told it to delete its own Registry entry, but users not closely inspecting the Windows Registry Cleaner results might find out the hard way.
CCleaner remains a handy tool for freeing up storage space, letting you customize how it works and permanently erase files. However, some behavioral quirks indicate that it's not quite a full replacement for Windows' built-in disk cleanup tools, which tend to be more conservative but also safer.
Why not use Ccleaner? Belgrade, Serbia Posts 4, There are better things to do instead of trusting some program to do it for you, don't let it get dirty in first place.
Using a program like Revo uninstaller to uninstall programs with no "tails" left in the form of registry and file leftovers. Ccleaner and such, can't help there much if at all. Turning off history in browsers will keep temp files at minimum.
Windows' own Disk Cleaner can take care of much of the rest including windows update backups. As System Restore can take a lot of space, keep it large enough for only two or three last points. All together, "cleaning" may even slow some things down.
Browsers use temporary files to speed up loading of pages already visited and some programs will rebuild their temp folders as soon as they are restated MS Office does a lot of that.
So cleaning like that may make more damage than good. Few thoughts about excessive cleaning: Want to Browse Faster? Why Using a Registry Cleaner Won? As I said, there are other ways, but why bother when CCleaner does it so well?
I don't understand the resistance to CCleaner or 3rd part programs in general. If they fill a need or make life easier why not use them? Another is Classic Shell or Start8. Makes Win 8, 8. I'll admit CCleaner has never, ever solved a single problem for me.
That is not what it's for. It has also never, ever caused me a problem and I've been using it for quite a few years. It does remove useless files from my hard drive that take up space. I run it every night before I power down.
Takes 5 to 10 seconds to run. I also use the Startup tool to keep unwanted stuff from running when I boot and the System Restore tool to monitor restore points, make sure they are being created as they should be.
This is another personal choice thing, you either do or don't like it, no middle ground it seems. Sorry, I need to clarify. I don't believe Ccleaner speeds up computers.
Removing a lot of the excess just gave it a small boost to get it moving faster.
