Back in the days of mag tapes, the physical delete was not reliable. They write very reliablely and hence, they overwrite very reliably. A spin stand tester is used to forensicaly examine hard drive platters.

Ccleaner win 10 82 police code - New version ccleaner for laptop you can draw windows start 10

When the overwrite stripes don't exactly line up with the previous write there can end up a very thin edge to the write stripe where the origininal data can be read. This requires a smaller than standard magnetic head which requires special positioning adjustment.

But I'm sure you could have googled that. The best description I could find is here in section 4. It might have been theoretically possible on really old type of drives, but it's never been properly or repeatably demontrated on them either.

This doesn't claim overwritten data can be recovered either, in fact it explicitly dis - claims it, perhaps you ought to read it ;. This doesn't claim overwritten data can be recovered either, in fact it explicitly dis-claims it, perhaps you ought to read it ;.

Yeah I read it. It says that it is not commercially viable to do it and results have never been publicly displayed. It doesn't say it can't be done. This is stuff that is only in the realm of criminal forensics and national security.

I'll see if I can find a link. In modern hard disks this does not happen. The head exactly tracks the previously written data. Any signal left from previous writes would be very unreliable. I've honestly never seen the point of CCleaner and the likes.

As for unrecoverable deletion, I'm sure there are better utilities I recommend Eraser from personal experience:. I have some sensitive documents on a 'Pool' laptop which i want to ensure are unrecoverable.

In a failed hard disk drive, the disk surface may or may not be damaged. If the disk is not physically damaged, the user's data is still there, unless it has been overwritten. It is very telling that the US Department of Defense's Combating Terrorism Technology Support Office recently placed a "Broad Agency Announcement" seeking just such a magic machine for damaged, erased, or overwritten media [8].

Can you find a single verifiable link that shows that overwritten user data has been recovered from a modern hard disk? Well, I can't find an article showing a real world example of this being done but I expect that those that are invoved in this sort of thing are unlikely to publish examples of their successes or failures.

I think I have found an example of an experimental situation where this was done though. The reason I say "think" is that I am unwilling to provide my financial details to the "Journal of Applied Physics" so that I can get access to the full article titled "Magnetic imaging on a spin-stand" but one of you might be more trusting.

Ccleaner win 10 82 police code - New version ccleaner for laptop you can draw windows start 10

From the article blurb: It is demonstrated that the image reconstruction can be performed by using the response function characterization of the MR head and the specially designed deconvolution technique, which yields the curl-free field producing component of magnetization.

The technique developed is illustrated by the sample examples of imaging of overwritten tracks with small misregistrations. Important to note is that the article dates back to and in the above para there is mention of "small misregistrations".

If this is indeed the case then recovery as I described in my post and as mentioned in the blurb is not possible on "modern" drives, whatever that may mean. No, super-top-secret data recovery tools don't exist. And even if they did, they can't be used anyway.

Because if they were, the tool would no longer be super-top-secret. I recommend Eraser from personal experience: Actually they do, depending on what you class as 'publish'. Gromit's in the industry, wrote that article, and if you want verification you can find him on OCAU I am not sure if he also posts here.

He's been happy to go on the record multiple times that a single pass is enough. I have too have never been able to recover any data from a drive that have a single pass erase.

Ccleaner win 10 82 police code - New version ccleaner for laptop you can draw windows start 10

Used several applications, getdataback, ontrack easyrecover, r-studio. All unsuccessful after a single complete pass overwrite. I was appalled at the misinformation in that article and wrote them a detailed a response.

They wanted to print it, but my employer wouldn't allow it to go ahead. That'd be right, not only can't we believe all we read on the internet or in the paper, but we can't trust the journalism we read in the popular press.

I'd have liked to have seen a response to the article that was published if it was realy that wide of the mark. Shame about your boss. Yeah, I agree but I wasn't bothered. People like to believe what they want and think they can recover data from any drive.

Data is packed too close, the tracks are very close together and the tracks have to be very precise or you contaminate crosstalk the adjacent tracks. If you put the head off to the edge of the track to read so called residual data from previous writes then you run the risk of reading a signal so weak it is unreliable or more likely, totally unreadable.

Also the current data on the track would be so strong it would swamp any data at the edge of a track. We know drives are digital but at this level, the head reading the track, they are all analogue. If this residual data at the edge of a track from previous writes, is actually readable after another write pass, is there any guarantee whether the residual data is from the previous write or many previous writes before that?

Ccleaner win 10 82 police code - New version ccleaner for laptop you can draw windows start 10

Any data recovered has to be CRC checked or similar to be valid. Even missing a single bit can render the interpretation of the data invalid. It would be a major capability to put the head off to edge of a track.

Disks rely on a strong signal from the data on the track to stay on track. Would Windows Defender remove the infected CCleaner version some people might think that this is Windows overstepping again.

To be honest this is the only rational choice. It is malware and had to be treated as such regardless the program it comes with. CCleaner has always seemed like one of those unnecessary programs to me, especially given Windows has its own Disk Cleanup tool that can clean things that others can't like WinSxS.

Most magic cleaning programs are usually considered snake oil, I've never understood why CCleaner is any different. The windows tool has always been incredibly slow. Whereas CCleaner is very quick, and very thorough and granular.

It is also far quicker to show the list of software that can be uninstalled, gives far better control over restore points to remove, has the option of secure overwrite, has a very comprehensive editor for startup items including scheduled tasks, all browsers, services, and registry.

Ccleaner win 10 82 police code - New version ccleaner for laptop you can draw windows start 10

For Win 10 I find it indispensable as it shows 'apps' and programs in one place to uninstall without 85 clicks to get to it. Besides, Microsoft's recommendations usually make me roll my eyes, or flat out face-palm.

I've used CCleaner for well over a decade with zero adverse effects on hundreds of computers. I stick with versions that work best, so am not affected by this. You can bet that I'm going to be scanning anyways though. That's because windows disk cleanup goes through updates, winsxs folder, and other things that CCleaner cannot even see.

Press windows key, type "programs", press enter. Opens up the remove programs control panel with like 3 steps. That does not include "apps". Also it takes quite a while for Windows to populate on a machine that has been in use for 6 months or so.

You haven't convinced me on this point. At any rate this is the first time I've heard of CCleaner being compromised, and I'e used ot for about a dozen years now. It is a hard lesson for them and likely will result in better security from here on out.

Also, the security exposure of ONE piece of software that does many things VS the exposure of using a half dozen pieces of software that may do some of the things slightly better.

I'll take the lower security risk and added convenience of having one program, thank you. I can right click the recycle bin, Open CCleaner, click Tools, and both lists are there combined.

That point is, if you remove more, it will break or windows will recreate the files anyway The only thing useful about CCleaner is registry. But, you have to look it very careful to not break something. I've been repairing computers for a couple decades now and generally, yes.

Those programs are snake oil and often make things worse. CCleaner is different because it is generally more careful about what it removes. Most of the program is no better than the built-in Windows utilities but no worse either.

However, the one component of it that is immensely valuable is the registry cleaner. Most registry cleaner programs are awful and dangerous and can very easily destabilize a PC. CC's is a lot more conscientious and I've had more than a few computers come to me with very bizarre bugs caused by orphaned registry entries that CC was able to find and fix.

I don't recommend CC to end users because any registry cleaner has the potential to screw over your PC, but when used appropriately, CC has the ability to fix stuff nothing else short of a very arduous manual cleanup could fix.

I use CCleaner occasionally, but never for "cleaning". I mainly use it to disable startups and context menu s. I knew I can do the same in msconfig for startups and regedit for context menu as I did that before, but it's just easier to do so in CCleaner.

Also, in term of context menu, you can also choose to just disable them instead of remove. But I never, ever, in a million years trusted or ever recommended getting near the registry cleaner part.

It's all snakeoil, I think CCleaner got a free pass because it had been around for so long, and didn't really advertise itself as a "miracle PC fixer" like most other cleaner apps did.

If we demanded every developer to start embracing UWP, there wouldn't be any crap to clean in the first place. In addition, this also gives you granular privacy control. I currently have the normal one installed, but I remember the UWP one was just the same.

Here are some reasons for why we need this. I looked the at the links, but while in theory this is great, in practice I didn't see any appreciable change after Project Centennial.

Also an easy central location to reinstall your apps, and in the future easily remotely migrate your desktop over to other devices with just a simple login. I really really like this concept and I'm a fan of the direction Windows Store is going, but I would really like it to have more things.

I got a new computer recently, I still had to use Ninite for a one - shot reinstall of my stuff. They advised against it, yes. It deletes a few indices that Windows 10 uses for keeping track of things; such as the Windows 10 Search Index.

Microsoft is not aiding terrorism. And if you did have incriminating evidence on your computer, why would you rely on CCleaner? It doesn't have an "incriminating evidence" removal tool.

And if it did, isn't that going "to allow some stuff to slide to aid terrorism, law enforcement, lawsuits and so forth disguising as a feature"??? Added "Interdiction", sorry for missing that. My intention was clear from the rest of the post.

I never ever knew this, just installed it on my new PC and never ran the cleanup. You can try application Everything Voidtools to search. Is much faster than Windows search. And as app launcher Wox.

I use them when Windows search again has issues after again bad updates and don't have the time to fix more problems or last resort reinstall Windows. I have a bit machine and Malwarebytes just picked up on it. It seems to be labled as trojan.

Not sure where to go from here Now does that mean I have lost all the files on this computer or are there any that could be safe like files on a separate internal drive? I'm uninstalling it from any machine I find with it in my environment.

Then going to do some thorough scanning. May even re image. Advising all those users to change their passwords too. Fuck me, I've been infected as well. I was able to use malwarebytes to remove the infection, and all other scans with Rkill, JRT, adwcleaner, and defender are all showing up as clean run multiple times after resets etc..

I have also uninstalled ccleaner. The malware collected information such as computer name, a list of installed software, a list of running processes, MAC addresses for the first three network interfaces, and unique IDs to identify each computer in part.

What is the probability that this one infected tablet passed on malware to another PC or device connected through my local network? Should i manually change all the MAC address's on all my network attached devices because of this?

Finally what can a malicious entity do with the type of information collected due to this infection? Thanks for any help you guys can share on this issue. Really sucks that i have to deal with this problem now all because of one stupid old 32bit windows 10 tablet.

I'd say that it might be best to change the password of those accounts, just in case. Also maybe scan the other computers too. Can't really say anything about those others. Avast's programs look like a collection of utilities that were useful in the Windows XP days but have since became irrelevant because of the build in windows features.

My now defunct PC was running super slow despite having i5 and dedicated graphics, and nothing worked. After a few hours of trials I was out of ideas, so I decided to uninstall Avast and switch to Avira Switch to Defender.

The built in Windows One. It's better and, you bet it! All the weird bugs, woes and performance issues were completely gone. Avast is way too strict and detects way too much stuff that is really innocuous.

I'm sure it would even detect itself as a virus if it had a chance to. Bitdefender is a little better than AV-Test, but it will never be as lightweight as Defender.

It's miles ahead of Avast, though. Luckily they noted the malware only ran on bit systems Which will be a relief for a lot of people. Whilst is is true, the Blog see informative Satysin link refers to 32 bit, it does not specifically say 64bit systems are not affected likely by context though.

I would still advise users to scan pc and update to latest version anyway as a precaution. Have virus scanners picked up on this yet? All I saw in the report was a recommendation to restore system to before the update.

The malware runs on any system, it's just that infected was only the bit installer. You can still run that on any system Though most people probably hopefully?

I use Geek uninstaller it's pretty good. After package removal it scans the registry for tail ends of a package. Geek Uninstaller is great, word of warning though, it fucks up some things when you uninstall UWP apps using it.

The article is not completely accurate here. I even checked it again before I uninstalled 5. Since I was curious I manually checked the installer for 5. First I was even more concerned after finding this, but then I realized that - as far as I know - there are no dedicated 32bit and 64bit installers of CCleaner, no?

They always come in one package for both versions. Sooo what does that mean for me? Was I safe because it installed the 64bit version or was I affected since it's too late once you start the installer?

I got confirmation that really only bit Windows versions were affected by it according to this passage:. The rest of the response was just copy-paste information about the issue I guess: Furthermore they apologized once more for the whole thing that they're working hard so that something like this will never happen again.

So basically if you're using a bit version of Windows you should've not been affected by this! This is a huge relief for me personally, because I really was in total paranoid panic mode now So hopefully you guys got a bit of clarification and relief if you're using bit Windows about this incident with me sharing this information I got from Piriform support!

Or you could just uninstall CCleaner. Even malware free, it's still almost completely worthless. If it's the hack I'd say they've shown themselves to be trust worthy. Three days from discovery to mitigation, and announcement with full details.

Companies get hacked, it is unfortunately a fact of life now. What's important is how they respond. Many companies would deny, delay and spin looking at you Equifax, this is an example of how it should be handled.

It's not an important enough program to be worth the risk IMO. If you're running any version later than 5. I just did an anti virus scan this past weekend and came back with no results, should be good to go then?

Also, I'm running bit Windows I would run another scan. Malwarebytes just found it on my system today and it was scanning automatically for the past month. This group seems most vulnerable since they are more likely to be running this stuff in the first place.

Point is, you should be concerned regardless, because these people make up a good portion of computer users, sure, the malware is in their computer, not yours, but still, these infections might spread, who knows what malware is capable of.

Only reason I still keep CCleaner around is for disabling startup items when installing some new programs. This same feature in the Windows Task Manager doesn't always work in my experience. Does anyone know if it's safe to use other Piriform programs?

I also have Defraggler installed on my laptop. Forgot to put this last night but Avast found nothing as well so I'm most likely fine. No other Piriform or CCleaner products were affected. I had this exact version Is slimcleaner a good alternative to ccleaner?

It's selling point is that it's a "microsoft gold application development partner. Some people use it, some people don't. I would love to see how many tracking cookies are on peoples PC's, especially those who claim "Windows 10 can look after itself".

That statement is hilarious. Sophos is detecting the new installer as "infected". Might very well be a false positive I just don't know how anyone can trust their servers for a little while. My ccleaner updates automatically and use 32bit win

My ccleaner updates automatically and use 32bit win I also use malwarebytes and not once has it detected anything from the v33 update?

I did however scan the installer for v33 and it caught it last night but didn't before!? I honestly dont know what to do besides change passwords. Should I be worried about ID theft even if malwarebytes and win defender didn't pick it up over the month?

Even though one may remove malware, it's opened doors and compromised the system as to make it easier to get back in, so it's best just to boot into firmware and restore Windows and remove all third party applications, restoring the from original sources.

Also understand the user files themselves which survive a restore also could be trojans now, so those have to be again full scanned once Windows is restored and fully updated with anti-virus definitions for any malicious code before opening them.

The best policy is to NOT have anything on a PC that one wouldn't want shared with the world or in open court, because this sort of intrusion surely smells like a three letter government agency type thing.

Sorry world, there just isn't the same level of user control over their own machines anymore, thanks to cooperation between the NSA, content creators, Intel, Microsoft, Apple, Google and other major companies we buy our products from.

Our machines are now all compromised from the factory, by design, by intention. So don't trust them with anything you wouldn't want to answer about in court. From what I understand, securely erasing an SSD just involves encrypting it and then throwing away the key.

Most SSD manufacturers provide a secure erase tool. That is IF one knows about and encrypts the drive, still if the password is gleamed somehow like keystroke sniffers then that renders that avenue of security mute.

If the intention is to irrecoverably encrypt the hard drive, why the hell would the user know the password? If I were writing a secure erase program I'd generate some random AES key or something and never show it to the user.

Maybe even switch keys every few blocks of data or something If I'm not mistaken, best practice is to do both. Purge the data electronically, then take it out back and make it into Swiss cheese.

Sure - I always make regular image backups and keep them for a couple of months or so, so I can back track before infection assuming it was later. Good policy, except for the firmware aspect as on some machines it also resides a image in ROMS so it boots faster and won't accept the older version on the re-imaged drive as it only moves forward in firmware versions and not backwards.

Did you note if you have programs that use the registry to store data? What drive s were the data on? Law enforcement may be able to still read from these areas if they are not completely "dead".

CCleaner will NOT erase secret stashes of files that you hid somewhere on the drive because it cannot tell what is what. This is a headache! Could you please provide more information?

It is so hard to try to understand what could have went wrong with just a simple "CCleaner did not work! I know i linked you to this thread to read my opinion on forensic data removal but was it necessary to bump a 4 month old thread that was started by a blatant troll who never come back?

If the forum can automatically change the color somehow of posts that are over 2 weeks old with no replies, for example, then this would provide a very good visual alert. Or alert a user when they click the Reply button "Hey, this post has not been responded to in over 2 weeks.

Are you sure you want to proceed"? If you wanted a discussion on secure file deletion why not just start your own thread? I assume you could post as long as paragraphs as you like then since it's your own thread.

It's just my crappy writing of the sentence. Posted June 30, If the police raided without warning there was no time to disable and delete all System Restore Points, and this could provide evidence without "forensic" tools.

The police are unlikely to confiscate all the computers in a company unless: I may have been watching too much television, but I have the opinions that: If evidence is found on the clones, it COULD be argued that this was caused by the examination, and then the original preserved drive is available for independent expert witness examination.

Additionally, regardless of any requirement for a conviction, if a new folder is created on the original drive and "deleted" files are recovered and copied to the new folder, these copies will be using up the "free space" from which they were being retrieved, so every file that is retrieved will have a good chance of over-writing the clusters and preventing recovery of more deleted files.

I believe this all started as a hoax. Either BenBen is pulling our leg, or perhaps a police man was playing an April Fool's day joke on the office. The computer would be shut down and NOT be rebooted, The drive s would NEVER be written to, but disconnected cloned, and only the clones would be searched for evidence.
