Sound good to you? It really depends on the plasma. A Kuro can be a decade old and still have better black levels than virtually any plasma out there. A entry-level Vizio plasma from a decade ago will look much worse because it has poor black levels.

Nearly every TV has streaming features built in. We always recommend a media streamer over using the built-in apps, except with 4K. Maybe it is not an issue with TVs anymore, but when I bought my last TV a few years ago, you had to be careful if you were planning to have a computer hooked up to it.
Some desktop video cards do but not many. Where does Seike fall in terms of quality vs. My Roku provides all the extra function I need. Very, very low end IIRC. All the Seiki sets have offered poor black levels and contrast ratios, lack of basic controls like a backlight control, and other flaws in the electronics that keep it from having a good image.
The colors are drop-dead gorgeous, for one thing. Have you had problems with your power supply board failing? I routinely had issues with this TV after power failures or if I would unplug the TV to move it for any reason at all.
I would have to wait some time until it would turn back on. The power supply board failed, outside of warranty. Because I purchased with my credit card I had another year of warranty to have the power supply board fixed.

It takes smaller than standard screws m4 instead of m6 so many washers were required. And even once everything was screwed down, it felt…floppy — sort of like I was bolting it into the plastic back, rather than some kind of metal frame.
Amazon customer service was great, walked me through technical support with Sharp. Happily, Amazon also made the return and refund trivial. It does have the best streaming system of anything by far, and that might be more important to some people.

I hope settings tweaks can take care of the noise I generally associate with LCDs. Low input lag on it is good for games too. What would be a good TV with good stock sound, for casual watching?
With soundbar mounting brackets that attach behind your set to the mount you are already using, you are talking about a few inches underneath the panel being taken up. They are all similar panels, backlights and features so the performance should be similar.
But shopping for TVs is a pain in the butt. Will be mostly used for gaming, 3 HDMI ports would be nice. No shitty motion control remotes. Could you help us decode which versions of the Vizio M series have VA vs.
IPS panels if we wanted to bump up to a bigger size? The rest are VA. Nothing but problems from day one. The set turns itself on after 10 minutes of being off. Sharp is sending me a new set which should arrive in a few weeks, but deep digging into Amazon comments suggests the problem is a firmware issue having to do with the instant on function of the set.
And the customer service set up at Sharp is pretty confusing with one department in US handling complaints, and another dept. The Sb is not going to go above Mbps.

If you use the Charge as a stand alone device it works just fine but Android integration is… well… problematic.
The setup process failed a few times before i actually managed to pair it with my Z3 Compact i had no problems with the Flex and it often fails syncing when i open the app on the phone. Call notification is a complete mess: Also, would the winning Vizio set do well in a very dim room?
I would imagine if brightness is reduced the dynamic range would be correspondingly lower, too, right? The dynamic range should remain constant because as you increase or decrease the brightness of the backlight, the quality of blacks will change as well.
With a lower level, less will escape through the panel and so the black level will drop, making the contrast ratio even across different intensities. Does no one else hate the soap opera effect? Trying to return mine to Amazon right now.
Make sure you save all your boxes. That would be unusual. It can be temporarily defeated by turning game latency to On. It is apparently properly fixed in a firmware update that Vizio sends out on their schedule.
The initial firmware had a bug where judder reduction usually called the soap opera effect could not be disabled no matter what you did in the settings. A firmware update corrected this and has been rolled out to customers.
Do you know the Firmware number where this issue has been resolved? The SOE makes everything unwatchable. I have judder reduction and motion blur set to zero. The only watchable mode is Game mode, but then there is a flicker to the brightness, like the TV is using a lower refresh rate.
Vizio rolls-out the software in a more methodical fashion. An obvious question though-all the other size in this model should be good right. Because of that the contrast ratios are much worse, and the colors might be less accurate as well.
You forgot to mention the insanely high motion blur on this model. Rtings reported on it. Can confirm there is intense motion blur. Almost non-existent input lag means nothing if your quick movements drag. I currently have a Panasonic plasma.
Combine that with my Onkyo receiver getting pretty hot, and my Xbox One turning into a small star after a few minutes, my living room gets almost unbearable during the warm months. The heat, along with the fact that my Panasonic has a big ugly bezel and is just now starting to get a tiny bit of burn-in in one corner, is making me start shopping around for a new TV.

Yes, but I really saw nothing wrong with the picture. It was comparable to any other Sony, Samsung. Just that the backlight could be bit more. I own the older inch variation of this TV.
Got it cheap on Black Friday. While it was a great price, the quality is subpar. However, compared to my sisters inch Samsung, the picture quality is downright shameful. SOE settings can almost always be turned off as was discussed in this thread regarding the winner.
Things have changed since I looked into it not that long ago! Still, that goes right to my point that there is no need to avoid Smart TVs, since you can just use external devices and avoid connecting the TV to the internet. Yes, it is a dumb TV.
Main reason I bought it, dont want the clunky smart features. PS3 works for me there. What about products for cleaning the screen due to smudges, etc… especially by kids? Cleaning a screen is very basic: Just use a microfiber cloth and, if necessary, some distilled water.
Microfiber cloths are easy to find Amazon Basics has them now ever and some TV vendors include one for you. Just wipe down the screen when powered off and cool and that should handle most smudges. If there are some that are tougher, apply water to the cloth never to the screen, to prevent it from running down inside the bezel, wring it out, and use that to remove smudges.
A basic lint-free microfiber cloth and water distilled, to avoid mineral deposits should handle it. While the Vizio data fiasco is a bit of a concern for consumer privacy and how that company respects consumer privacy.
I value having the best bang for my buck, and I can look past those faults as long as Vizio tries to fix their ways. I would still go with the Vizio, as it was your choice for the best tv, in spite of the recent news.
Very curious on how that brand would compare to the ones you reviewed. Understood, that makes since on why I never seen that brand reviewed. I know I could get some 4K content like youtube videos, but realistically, none of the content from my HTPC will be in 4k.
For things like netflix, I would probably switch to using the built-in smart-TV app since it would give me 4k content. Is there a difference in input lag? Usually, the built in scaler in the TV is the superior option, compared to scalers in less-expensive equipment like dvd players and such.
There are exceptions, however, so the only way to know for sure is to try both and see which looks best. MadVR does some very good processing now, comparable to high-end video scalers like a Lumagen, and will outclass any TV scaler typically.
With games you probably want to test both ways, but the lag with a p signal was very low. Will that work in general, and specifically will that work with the new Apple TV?
I really wish Amazon would make a client for the new Apple TV. A LOT of people are upset about this. Since its all digital, I think there should be no quality issues. Yes, that will work.
And Vizio along with Sony is one of the few companies that will still output 5. You can also turn off the Smart Interactivity and still use Amazon. Does Samsung output 5.

And probably in your Blu-ray player. Do any of these hamper the functionality of any of the others? The availability of a built-in app has no bearing on using an external device to put a picture on the TV.
You can use the built-in apps, or not. But otherwise, no, feel free to completely ignore the presence of the built-in apps. Are they much of a muchness? Or is the Samsung leaps and bounds above the Sony? I have the functionality I need, I want picture quality rankings without the other variable influences.
I bought the vizio M43 based off your review and I love it! This does not seem normal to me and it is quite troubling. It is over WiFi or Ethernet? Should have said MIFI. My old TV streamed just fine through it, but the vizio sporadically freezes and needs to reboot.
After it froze while watching regular tv the other day, I called customer service and they had me do a hard reset, which worked for a couple hours, but then had its worst freeze yet - it was unable to turn off so I eventually had to unplug the power source.
Not worried about streaming or more than 2 HDMI ports. Just size and picture quality. But it does have a beautiful picture. I will be viewing from about ft away and it will be wall mounted. So answer me this: Both of you, please read this.
Good article, which confirms what I wrote. Except for this entire section: Only if something is wrong. Also, anything can be hooked up temporarily at any time, just to update and then disconnect again.
The problem I run into with the Blu-rays is that the contrast on less expensive TVs is not good enough for the contrast setting tools on the disc to work properly. Myself and another professional calibrator did testing on this and wrote up the data here: What can happen is the whites will get a color tint to them as you push contrast higher.
Is the better way to set contrast just to adjust it until you visually get the best picture? As in, set it as high as I can without tinting the whites? You set it as high as you can without tinting the whites or causing that to disappear.
In the old days every single TV would crush white highlights, because CRTs and plasma TVs would run out of power to drive the display enough. Vizio support said it could have been the motherboard or lamp.
A complete failure after 5 hours is a real disappointment. Instead of getting a replacement, I opted for a return to research other non-Vizio TVs. Best Buy was completely unhelpful and rude at both time of purchase and return.

The quality of the picture is wonderful compared to the older Sony LCD set it replaced. I had a problem with it after 2 days where it would not turn on, but it seemed to fix itself.
I agree with Chris H. In the past I have had to return two Samsung televisions that died after a couple of days, too, so these things just happen these days. Buy from a place with a good return policy and you should be fine.

I bought the modem about a month ago and having issues with internet dropping and needing to reset the modem. Happens about once a week. I contacted Comcast and got the EOL bs from the first one I talked but the second one got the point and they sent somebody out.
Comcast claims that the signal is stable into my building and apartment. Is there a way to test the modem as well? Having to reset the modem and router Airport Extreme are causing some down stream problems with hard disks etc.

In your testing, is the motion blur really bad? We currently have an 8 year old Samsung LCD set that I am assuming is also 60hz refresh and sports look fine. Are there settings on the Vizio I think you mentioned you created a sports custom setting that you would recommend to help overcome the motion blur?
If watching a TV head on is not an option at all, what second choice pick could we make? Most of the LCDs have very similar viewing angles. Buying a good full motion mount and moving the TV to adjust the viewing angle is the best option then.
Hello Chris, I would be very grateful if you could give me some guidance. I do have some odd problems with the inputs that I hope you might have some insight on. I emailed Vizio support and they suggested that the Roku outputted 4K content only at 60fps.
This actually has another advantage: I have two other Netflix sources: Any solution for this that you see? I got the Roku 4 specifically to stream 4K content and feel kind of dumb using the Vizio app, which is not quite as enjoyable to use.
I do still get plenty of use for the Roku. The Roku 4 should support 5. Something like our receiver pick has six inputs that are all HDMI 2. These open back phones provide a pretty spacious and immersive soundfield, especially when coupled with an Astro Mixamp for virtual headphone surround.
However, Netflix provides pretty good information. On its main menu, it indcates whether a video is available in 5. When using the Netflix app on the Vizio or the Sony Blu-ray, content indicates if it is avalable in 5.
BTW, I have read in some places that the Vizio does not pass 5. Thanks again and apologies for the length of this reply. Testing the Roku 4 right now with House of Cards Season 4, it passes 5. It appears that the M43 does pass a 5.
According to the bar, it is receiving a DD signal for 5. I also do not appear to get a 5. This sentence is confusing to me: The feet are slightly narrower than the TV itself. I think of a cabinet as a space with sides. I have the M43 on a inch stand.
The feet have about an inch to spare on either side while the TV overhangs the stand by about the same on each side. Some comments about the TV remote: It irritates me quite a bit. We moved our Roku box to another room so I only recently started using the TV remote for apps.
Also, the keyboard seems to function poorly. I almost chucked the remote out the window after trying to enter our Amazon and Netflix passwords. Definitely a poor remote experience.

When I bought a VT60 plasma, another calibrator I know bought one as well. Same size, same model, same month of manufacturer. In every case, it made the image less accurate than using the default THX or Cinema modes.
If we calibrated it ourselves, we got a better image than those modes, but copying made it worse. Each TV is different when it comes off the line. Wished this guide would have been updated sooner.

To be an HDR display you need a bit panel to show the full dynamic range, but these are probably 8-bit panels. It just means it can do the processing internally instead of needing something external to convert the HDR display to SDR before it hits the display.

That being said, Vizio support was excellent. They asked to see a picture of the screen, decided it was fixable, and will be sending a tech on-site to fix it.
So the Vizio support was actually pretty hit and miss. It seems they employ a couple of external call center firms, and depending on where you get, your experience changes. One call center knew what they were talking about, instantly knew my open case from my phone number, and did everything right.
This was a problem as they had scheduled a repair tech but then switched case numbers on me, and a couple days later the repair tech service request was denied because there was no trouble shooting steps recorded on the new case number.
This was across two weeks, five case numbers, and three service requests and still nobody actually showing up at my door. Lesson learned though, refurbished TVs are not worth the hassle! The sound abruptly cuts out I mean all forms of audio output and will not come back until the TV is reset manually or unplugged and plugged back in.

We also noticed some posterization with tone mapping on HDR if you set the contrast really high, and turning it down to fix this removed lots of the HDR benefits. What are your thoughts on RTings. They value certain things more than we do in some cases, and we value other things.
When we tested HDR the Samsung had lots of bad tone mapping at the top end and we had to reduce the contrast to remove that. Reducing the contrast lowers the light output and removes the benefits of having HDR in the first place.
Both are fine TVs, we just found the performance of the Vizio to be better in our testing. Also, the remote with full keyboard on the back was great! You can leave your phone in the other room for TV time. Will this be addressed in the full review?
You cast from any app that supports GoogleCast and it shows up just like a Chromecast or another Cast target. The Vizio is just an overall better looking, more flexible display for most people. We cover the tracking in the Best TV guide and will be pulling that into here as well, but the basic version is that everyone tracks you.
Vizio got a lot of publicity last year about it, and so we looking into it and everyone does it. The Vizio ED1 linked page lists the product description as having no tuner. Is that a typo on their end or yours?
The ED1 has a tuner, as their image of the back panel on their website shows. Though the P50 has a 60Hz native refresh rate, it can switch to 24Hz when film content is detected.
The display settings on the TV confirm it as such. The only downside is if you want a smooth soap opera effect for sports and gaming and such content which maxes out at 60fps anyway, unless coming from a PC, but I find that type of processing unnatural and distracting.
One small downside—the full-array local dimming FALD has a slightly noticeable flicker when changing from bright to dark scenes as the algorithm lags slightly, but future firmware updates are supposed to improve the issue further.
If your recommendation is going to be a tuner-free TV, will you also be making a recommendation for a good but affordable tuner? Having access to over-the-air signals is quite important to me. While doing your rewrite, I hope you will incorporate a table or two.

I think my wife would like the simplicity of the Samsung internal apps and the perceived Samsung reliability is still pulling me to the Samsung. Consumer Reports does not like the Vizio M for some reason.
By comparison, we currently have been watching a basic LG 32in 32LNB and havent had any issues with the tv really. I note the 50in Vizio M only has a 60hz as well. My last concern is sound system.
The samsung to samsung bluetooth connection seems appealing. If your main streaming source is going to be Amazon Prime, you should probably look at the Samsung. The Samsung might have better motion, but the Vizio has better contrast and most people will find that to be more important in viewing.
Each one is a trade-off, and Rtings really values motion resolution while CNet and I really value contrast ratios more. Unless you get an OLED, it really is a series of trade-offs when trying to determine the best set.
But for you, the Samsung is probably the better choice. Just ordered the Vizio ED2. I watch most everything from a Roku 3—will it be worth the cost for me to upgrade to one of the new 4K Rokus or will the quality difference be negligible?

Why do your measurements differ from rtings? There are lots of ways to do measurements that can lead to different data, and some people prefer certain methods, as each have their own benefits and detraction. An LCD with an edge lighting system will also perform differently with patterns than one with a full array system, depending on the size of the pattern.
The goal is to be consistent and try to pick the ones that you think most represent the real world. The one downside is the panel they use makes off angle viewing poor. But I knew that going in, and bought it as a bedroom set to watch straight on.

Sound came back quickly, video not so much. At times, even fast forwarding on the DVR would cause a lack of sync. Turning the DVR off and back on cause the same issues. Other than falling back to in the TV speakers.
At first guess, it would seem that the receivers are the issue. Any thoughts as to who the culprit is? Blu-ray players are almost all going to output at p, while DVRs are going to do i or p.
When the TV gets sent something in a different resolution that before, it has to sync up the video signal again and this takes time, while the receiver can still keep playing the audio without an issue. This might even happen while changing channels on the DVR, as channels are different resolutions, if it is set to native output mode.
The Sony receiver, depending on the model, might also do video processing and then convert everything to p before it goes to the TV. In this case the Sony is having to re-sync the video and is causing the delay.
Some TVs and receivers have to resync every time you change inputs and it takes a few seconds for the new source to appear. Thank you for the response, it is greatly appreciated.

The PQ is good enough for most people, and most TVs today offer pretty good overall quality when compared to an LCD from a few years ago as well. I then used the settings from Rtings. For most people this is fine, as those patterns are often more useful to evaluate TVs for review than for basic setup.

Vizio just announced the new E series, and so I am unsure of whether to buy the EE2 these retailers claim to have, or wait for the newer EE2 thinking there will be a difference, but perhaps you can clear things up.
If the new are not out yet, is there any estimate on when they will be come available? HDMI 1 has the option to turn on the Color sub sampling. You could do this. Reviews on other sites for the The Vizio MD0 indicate that it is incompatible with the Xbox One, which is currently one of the cheapest 4K Blu-ray players on the market.

Of course, this is something we will track and see if it continues to be an issue. The most common issue is the frame coming apart slightly during shipping, which then causes the LCD panel to shift.

Our tv is now junk — too expensive to repair according to Vizio. When you do a search for Vizio online, many of these similar issues come up — tvs breaking down very shortly after the 1-year warranty expires, Vizio saying that repair is too expensive.
So we have to buy a new TV. An employee at a local electronics store said that he advises people never to buy Vizios because they break down too often. Not perfect, but good enough to still watch.
Have to use physical buttons on the tv itself. If you are worried that your tv will fail minutes after your warranty expires, buy it through a retailer that add their warranty like costco or with a creditcard that adds additional warranty coverage.

Do you have any advice on good HDR sources? You can get HDR with the built in Chromecast from any app on your phone that will cast to it. Other than Amazon not supporting Chromecast, pretty much everything else does Netflix, Vudu, etc.

The M-Series changed a lot between and The new model has fewer local dimming zones but adds wide color gamut support that the lacked.
The TCLs with built in Roku sound perfect. And now you see my struggle. Larger will NOT work as, aside from needing to slot into the available space, I only sit feet at most away and a larger set will trigger motion sickness due to size overwhelming distance.

The Soap Opera effect is when a TV is taking content and interpolating it to run faster, typically with a Hz panel. Do you know why that information does not align? But every single vendor lies about this and the true refresh rate is 60Hz.
And unlike other makes, they offer no way to turn it off. PS — I swear TVs are getting worse even as resolution gets better. Missing my Hitachi plasma more and more. That is just a 3rd party vendor that is selling them for more, through Amazon, while Amazon is out of stock.

The cheaper TCL is fine, and very easy to use, but the image quality comes up short of the Vizio typically. If you plan to watch 4K content, then that would be our recommendation. The plasma will offer better motion just because of how plasma and CRT tech works, they always look better but the TCL will have similar black levels, be much brighter, and offer wide color gamut support.

Brought it home, set it up and discovered that viewing angle issues are severe. Color degrades markedly unless you are looking directly at it. Shift even one foot to the side and the color starts to fade.
Move to an extreme angle and the color is totally washed out. I returned and got a refund. I have seen this problem mentioned briefly in otherwise positive reviews, but unless you plan on watching by yourself and sitting dead-center, TCL is a loser.

My point was that TCL — a new brand to me — is getting lots of positive reviews, so the average consumer, like me, might assume that they make a pretty good product. I figured the cheaper model I purchased would not be as sweet as the models you and others touted, but that it would be satisfactory overall — which it was not.
Is this a pitfall with all brands? That every manufacturer makes its share of crappy models? Buyer beware and all that. Some TVs in the past have had the same model number, but two different panels, and one was much better than the other.
You really have to look for the specific model number in a review because the other models from the same company can be completely different. Even analog would be superior for transmission of multiple uncompressed channels such as surround sound.
Most setups would run sound through a receiver and not bother with the TV. I have seen reviewers note this as well. Did you discover this during testing? There is an advanced remote you can buy separately called TCL RC64 for around 50 bucks on ebay and sometimes on amazon, which pairs automatically with the P turning it into effectively a P The P-series was definitely a step up from the S.

I feel like me might be speaking different languages. The TCL television has a clear motion index which enhances the native refresh rate of the LCD panel of the television from 60Hz to produce an effective refresh rate of Hz.
However, the television does not have a motion smoothing which you may disable. Motion Smoothing requires that the panel operate at Hz to implement. Their clear motion index indicates that the backlight for the panel, not the panel itself, operates at Hz, and adjusts based on the setting of the backlight for brightness.
So if you are at a lower brightness level, the backlight will flicker more because of that. The only way to avoid it is to have a panel that runs at a multiple of 24Hz, with Hz being ideal. Both the backlight refresh rate and judder might be something that you are more sensitive to than others, but neither is motion interpolation or the SOE.
I picked up the 55p ten days ago and I am definitely seeing something that looks to me like Soap Opera Effect. Stranger Things looks amazing, but The Crown definitely has a video quality to it.
A Youtube tech reviewer who owns the 55p said that by turning on Game Mode, he was able to bypass all picture processing and turn off the Soap Opera Effect. Let me know if that helps! The TCL rep posting to Amazon on the product states the same thing.
I took a look at my friends Sony xe to compare the motion. That Sony has Motion Interpolation that you can turn on and off on a scale from 0 to 5. There is definitely a difference in how it looks at 0 compared to the TCL when watching content that was shot on digital video.
The TCL just looks more like video. Interestingly, when I upped my Netflix subscription to Ultra HD, this issue got better, however the clips that the netflix app plays when you are navigating their menu look terrible.
